Shortly after an earthquake event, it is very important to have a precise map of the damage caused to infrastructures and to know the location of the most affected areas in order to effectively manage the assistance to be provided to the affected populations. EO data can provide valuable information in this regard, due to its ability to provide a synoptic view of affected areas and the ease of access to information in remote areas or hard-to-reach areas due to damaged communication infrastructures.
In the last twenty years, the availability of satellite imagery with a high degree of detail during a catastrophic event has improved considerably. The high revisit time of satellite constellations, e.g. Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2, allows fast access to affected areas, while the availability of very high resolution data allows the production of seismic damage maps of a single building.
